Day 3: Thou Tryest Something New

No, your eyes are not deceiving you. There was no Day 2 post. Why? Because I was running on 48 hours of no sleep so when I came to the hotel and slept from 8pm until 7 the next morning. Best 11 hours I’ve ever had. Alas, we did lots of walking around London and saw the sights. Pics will be posted at some point. But that’s not what I want to talk about today. Rather, today is all about trying something new.

I’ve been game to try new things, especially food, ever since I was younger and my uncle Brice said “Just try it. You may like it.” He was right. Escargot and calamari are quite good! So my theory is usually “I’ll try this once and see if I like it” unless it has something to do with massive heights, public embarrassment, or squirmy gooey things on my plate.

Why is this relevant to London you ask? Mackenzie, one of my students on this study abroad trip, experienced three new things tonight that she never had before and ended up finding herself liking the results. First, we went to this amazing restaurant called Tas Pide, an authentic Turkish restaurant next to the Globe. We didn’t know what to expect but the prices were right and the food looked good.

While ordering I spied hummus on the menu so I bought some for the group. Turns out she hadn’t had hummus before. Whaaaat? I know, right? So in she dove and ended up really liking it. We also didn’t know much about the menu but ordered according to what sounded good. She ended up getting a traditional Pide (sort of like a personal pizza made with fresh bread, ingredients and in a triangle form) and I had Kuzu Tandir (shredded lamb with a tomato sauce, peppers, and spices – pic above). Home run number two for Mackenzie.

The final new experience for Mackenzie was a biggie in my book: Shakespeare. She hadn’t seen a performance before. Again, whaaaat? In theory, if you’re going to see Shakespeare it’s not usually in London at the Globe. But hey, why not start at the top. At the end of the performance we asked her how she liked seeing Taming of the Shrew. Admittedly it was hard to follow the dialogue, but she really liked the performance. The Bard isn’t always an easy one to follow but this performance was done with enough physical comedy and a contemporary an Irish bent, that it made all the difference.

Learning doesn’t always occur in the classroom. Rather, learning happens in places where you least expect it, and at the oddest times. Tonight Mackenzie wasn’t afraid to try something new and each time she found herself liking the results. Not everything will be like this, but at least she can look back and see how this class wasn’t just about the syllabus and projects, but rather about something more: about taking a leap of faith on the simplest things and seeing where they take you. Sort of like taking the wrong tube by accident. But that’s a story for another time. My bed awaits.
